Devotion from Matthew 2
Jesus was under the care of Joseph and Mary until he was an adult. When he was a baby, his earthly parents had to move him to few places for fear he would be killed. First from Herod and then Archelaus. Joseph with his family first fled to Egypt and then to Galilee after listening to the angel of the lord.
Jesus looks so helpless right? Our thought runs that Herod or Archelaus should have been overthrown immediately and Jesus should have been placed there on the throne. Because that’s what my God is able to do. While, this is possible even without lifting our pinkie, God does not work in this manner for two reasons: one, There is time for everything and two, this is a fulfillment of the prophets who spoke many centuries before about what is to happen. When Joseph and family escaped to Egypt, this fulfilled Hosea’s prophesy (Hos. 11:1) and when Joseph again fled to Galilee and lived in a town Nazareth to fulfill that he will be called a Nazarene.
God’s purposes in our life is similar to that of Jesus’.
- There is a time for everything. Our lives are in the hands of God. There will be occasions, you will have to run to an opposite direction to flee from your enemies. God allows that to happen because it’s not a season for you yet. All we got to do is to listen to the voice of the Lord and wait patiently until it’s time for us to come out. We cannot fight our own battles. God will fight for us. The season of waiting can be difficult. It can get very confusing of not knowing where or what is going to happen to our future.
- God is fulfilling His plan in your life and not yours: We can either come under his mighty plans or just work it out on your own. If we surrender knowing fully God is going to fulfill the plan he has for you, we got to listen to the voice of the Lord. Wait like Joseph did. He might have not expected the angel to suddenly appear out of nowhere and ask him to flee to Egypt. But Joseph immediately obeyed knowing fully well the outcome if he doesn’t. There are many times I wanted to fulfill my own destiny because I thought I was capable of doing it right and second, I did not hear the voice of the Lord. When the world is ringing out so loud, how do you even listen to the voice of the Lord?
Jesus submitted and obeyed his father in everything he did. Whether, it was miracles, choosing disciples, ministering to the people and even dying on the cross to save you and me. We are called to obey the voice of the Lord in every direction we take. We can see throughout Scriptures where kings or leaders choosing to obey their own destiny and falling apart from what God wanted them to be. We are called to be always listening to God’s voice to obey and turn, run, hide, win only for the glory of God. May we always be tuned to hear God and not be worried even if we have to flee from our enemies because God has a purpose in our lives and He will accomplish it no matter what.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Phil 4:13
